Integrating Chinese and Western Curricula

At the primary school stage, CBFS takes the national curriculum standards as its core, integrating advanced international curriculum concepts and the IB curriculum framework to construct a diverse curriculum system that includes humanities and science, physical education and arts, and artificial intelligence, among others. This system comprises three main parts: core curriculum, inquiry curriculum, and featured curriculum. CBFS organically integrates these three types of courses in daily teaching through Project-Based Learning (PBL), inquiry-based learning, interdisciplinary studies, and immersive bilingual (Chinese and English) education. This approach provides students with a unique international holistic education, equipping them with the foundational qualities and skills of global citizens, and enabling them to face the future with greater confidence.

At CBFS, each student has a unique, tailor-made schedule, truly achieving a "one student, one plan" and "one person, one timetable" model of class allocation. In this diverse curriculum system, students are helped to discover their own strengths, maintain a personalized pace of growth, stimulate their intrinsic motivation to learn and increase their confidence.

Core Curriculum

Core Curriculum is based on the national curriculum standards, which establishes a basic knowledge framework for children in primary school. At the same time, with knowledge as the carrier, students can know themselves, society and the world in the process of learning, and establish basic values and multicultural identity. The national curriculum, including Chinese, mathematics, English, science, morality and law, music, fine arts, physical education and health, labour skills and information technology, are all carried out in a single discipline through transdisciplinary learning; allowing students to have a multi-dimensional and comprehensive understanding of themselves, others and the world through thematic exploration and project-based research activities.

Chinese and international teachers work closely together in multiple subjects to achieve the real integration of Chinese and Western bilingual teaching. Give full play to the advantages of Chinese teachers in the core socialist values and cultural heritage, as well as the teaching of core courses. At the same time, giving full play to the advantages of international teachers in language immersion, multicultural edification, and the opening of characteristic courses such as science, music, sports, art, etc. They also cooperate with Chinese teachers in transdisciplinary inquiry to realise a truly international school integration of Chinese and Western education from both academic and cultural perspectives.

Inquiry Curriculum

The inquiry curriculum  at CBFS are developed on the foundation of core courses, integrating the IB PYP curriculum framework. These courses are theme-based Units of Inquiry (UOI), driven by concepts and are interdisciplinary in nature. The inquiry curriculum covers multiple themes worthy of exploration, no matter where in the world the students are. Conducted in a multidisciplinary collaborative manner, students engage in inquiries either in groups or individually. They showcase their findings through various forms of assessment, such as speeches, posters, PowerPoint presentations, and videos. This helps students understand the learned knowledge in multiple dimensions and connect it with the real world, uncovering the unknown and enhancing their overall abilities, thus igniting their passion for learning.

At CBFS, students engage in six primary Unit of Inquiry (UOI) themes each academic year, with three units per semester, lasting for six weeks each. Chinese and foreign teachers combine the core concepts and related concepts of each unit with the content of the current stage of classroom teaching. They organize students to search for inquiry clues through group cooperation or individual independent exploration, and students present their reflection and connection to real life in various forms such as speeches, posters, PPT, and videos.
